On the note of screwing with physics I think it's time for another lesson.
Now I know I said this lesson would be on hive reincarnation and religion and it will but first, the gates.
These marvellous inventions provide the Hiver race with the fastest method of transport possible, (Albeit you need to travel slower than light in order to set a gate up.) allowing instantaneous travel between any to points in the universe, by using a gate you are transported everywhere, then to target location instantaneously. Don't ask how a bunch of bugs managed to do this but apparently they like their quantum mechanics.
Now what would be seen as the best breakthrough in Hiver engineering, ever, creates huge problems for queen. Now that her race is so spread out, it isn't difficult for a band of princes's to come together and overthrow her. All they need to do is seize a world and its gateship and deactivate the gate. This would allow them many years to build up, before reactivating the gate, instantly travelling to the homeworld kill the queen and seize the royal gems for herself. As such only the most fanatical engineers and scientists, to the queen, know the secrets to gate construction and maintenance, and are even tasked self destruct the ship should someone attempt to board it. This results in full control for the current queen, because upon learning that a princess has become independent the gates will only ever be used against her.
Any way now onto more biology and a sprinkling of religion. Hivers don't believe in reincarnation, they CAN reincarnate. Should a Hiver perish in battle, a princess and can devour the brain of the deceased Hiver, then with some magic of her digestive system fuse the dissolved matter with an egg. This causes all of the dead Hivers memories to be saved and when it hatches will be effectively reborn. On a interesting side note when a Hiver is reborn they do not need to be reborn as the same subspecies. For example a Hiver worker painter creates some beautiful art for another princes, they grow very close to each other unfortunately workers can't reproduce. Some time later some Tarker come along and bomb the planet the painter is killed but his brain is more or less intact the princess can reincarnate him as a prince so they can be finally happy.
Now the religion, Hivers do believe in a sort of god queen that gave birth to them all with even some figures of devil equivalent princess's but in my opinion I think this may be just the first queen that was on recorded history.
