So we recently read Edgar Allen Poe's "The Pit and the Pendulum" in my American Lit class
and when we discussed its ending my teacher brought up 'deus ex machina' ("god out of the machine") which is basically: 'an improbable or unexpected plot device that suddenly appears to resolve a situation'.
Anyone who has read The Pit knows what im talking about.
The ending in my opinion sucked compared to the rest of the story, which i thought was done beautifully.
So the question is is there any other works that bother you for its use of deus ex machina (If you could also provide a brief summary of how its used that would be nice)
