It has been almost 70 years since the amphibious landings on five Norman beaches by American, British, and Canadian soldiers, along with airborne assaults further inland and, of course, the combined efforts of partisan forces, SOE, OSS, and other intelligence agencies to insure that the risky amphibious assault could land on the beaches and secure a beachhead as easily as possible. Approximately 16,000 allied and axis soldiers died fighting of the beaches, and in the days following the landings, the allied forces used every resource available to create a makeshift landing area out of the beaches, and drive on into France. Feel free to discuss the events of the days prior to, of, and after the landings relating to the subject. EDIT: Thank you, D3adtrap.
Also great credit to to geniuses who tricked Hitler into thinking the landings were going to be somewhere else.
This is never given enough credit. However brave or skilled the invading forces were, without this deception they would certainly have failed.
Now I'm sure @FascistPatriot would love to say something on this. My opinion though is just we should all be thankful for the men who died that day, sacrificing there lives for the greater good (a Western Europe free of communism )
Really confused. However, a toast to all of the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice to keep the world free from Nazi oppression.
What I meant by that is that even if the Allies didn't invade Normandy, Russia still had a massive chance to win the war, and thus communist regimes would have sprung up in France, Belgium, Germany, Netherlands, etc. It was just a joke.
I mean the beach itself there was no one we just walked ashore. Until we go more inland then we were attacked.
Okay, because I was going to say you guys did quite a lot of fighting when you guys got off the beach.
