I got a bunch when I was at the Mall of America last weekend. They are quite good and have made me decide that "Chaos is bad, mkay?" (Except for Tzeentch, who is great) In stark contrast to my opinion based on the Dawn of War series. So far I've read Storm of Iron by Graham McNeil, about the Iron Warriors assault of an Adeptus Mechanicus stronghold which was pretty damn epic, and I'm currently working my way through the Soul Drinkers Omnibus, a collection of three novels about the titular Space Marine Chapter. Want to get a book covering the Third War for Armageddon but all I've found are ones relating to the Second War...
Dammit I;ve got one upstairs that was pretty good... what was it... Eisenhorn - just checked it then - read the first part, v. good so far, also you tend to get value for money since the books are very long...
To even attempt playing it you need to buy this huge rules book (prob. 50€) and then a stats book for your faction (+ 20€) and then you need to get your models and dye etc. I heard people investing like 1000€ in a single army I found out that I have one WH40K book. Well novel. Assault on black reach
I've always wanted to try it out, but yeah, I've heard it's by-far the most expensive table-top game out there.
Maybe that's why only the saddest of nerds play it, 'cos they have nothing else to spend their money on. Saying that, there's always something to spend more money on. I guess spreading cost over time has made it more fun for me, even if i've spent more, a box set here and there or getting one rulebook between your mates makes it seem a bit cheaper than blowing over £100 straight away. Oh, and eBay's not too bad for unassembled and out of production models. Anyway, on the subject of the books, i've only read the Commissar Cain novels, and think they're great. So maybe i'll buy a bunch of others
you should look into the lord of the night. it's a great book my number 1 for warhammer 40k books. also just so you know storm of iron is part on of a 3 part set of books, that one is by far one of the more epic ones.
In the epilogue the author said he thought he had treated both sides fairly and that we should like both sets of characters. I didn't like any of the Chaos characters at all, and thought the usually despicable Imperium was actually quite likeable, especially Hawke. [spoiler:3le5ffkq]But he did keep me guessing up to almost the very end as to what the result would be. And I'm glad all of the more douche-y Chaos characters got snuffed out, but I was like WTF at the Avatar of Khorne being all like: HAHA I'MA RAPE YOU LIBRARIAN KTHXBAI. Also the Warmaster really shouldn't have received daemonhood because he was pretty effing incompetent. Also major plot hole: why didn't the Space Marines use their strike cruiser in the defense? Even if it was going to get raped by the Chaos ship in orbit I bet the ordinance it was carrying could have dealt with the enemy Titans and wiped out a good portion of their lines.[/spoiler:3le5ffkq]
well chaos ARE evil just by the fact of being with chaos and the Imperium is really just hard to place. with some of the stuff they do being kinda evil to some being fully evil to it being for the good of humans as a whole it's just hard to place. if your looking for a fairly nice race/empire thats the least evil then you should look into the tau.
Well the Imperium comes across as a sinking ship that's run by genocidal maniacs to me (Inquisition should really do more thorough background checks before they hand over the ability to exterminate an entire planet of life). I doubt the Emperor would be pleased at the state of things. I quite like the Eldar though, and Tzeentch. Khorne, Nurgle, Slaanesh, not so much.
well the Inquisition is truth are doing stuff with the best meaning behind their actions for humanity as a whole. if you knew the backround of what used to happen when worlds lets pychers live with out restrictions and such it was alot worse. the only part of the Imperium i hate that is really dragging them down are the adeptus mechanicus
It seems like the Mechanicus would be terribly inefficient as the main researching arm of the Imperium given their belief (and I'm guessing because of the way the Warp works the resulting existence) in machine spirits. And I don't really get how they keep forgetting things; surely among the trillions of humans in the galaxy someone has found (re-found...) a way to store information in a database. Or at least pillaged it from alien scum. EDIT: I mean the Eldar can store souls in their databases for goodness sake.
you misunderstand the adeptus mechanicus it's not a researching arm, in fact tech progress in the Imperium from research is and has been as 0% for 10,000+ years. they only build what they know how to copy from database copys from STC's from 20,000+ years ago. the adeptus mechanicus only tries to find already used advanced tech from humanity's past
they had no choice, the adeptus mechanicus holds a monopoly on all current tech and the forge worlds to use them along with war titans and even whole fleets and ground forces.
Then it's evident we need to commence the burning immediately. Also, what's up with Tyranids and Chaos. Do they get along, err..?
the Tyranids don't "get along" they eat, that is all. they suck the life from worlds then move all useing the genemass they got from it to make new nids.
