I know one ship I'm not getting on! :D

But seriously, this isn't all that big a thing. There are plenty of Carnival ships that rival and exceed the Titanic. Making a Titanic-sized ship for luxury cruising isn't all that big a deal any more.

I am actually much of a Titanic historian myself as I have always been fascinated with the story of it, so I am thinking about riding just to see what it would be like to have a first class ticket. They should make it faster, but I am mostly interested to board based on curiosity. My dad sure as hell will never board a ship, he thinks something bad will happen.

Considering some of the inept captiancy lately, I don't particularly blame him.

True, as a historical vessel, it'll be interesting to ride, but I probably wouldn't.
They would be balencing budget with historical accuracy with modern technology.
End up, it might not be too good.

I do recall watching a program on ship engineering and piloting and they said that the rivet-ridden hull of the Titanic was part of its demise.
While I appreciate the effort, the Titanic isn't exactly worth risking my life over.

I assume, foolishly, of course, that the ship will hit something that will sink it.
But I am sure that they will prepare better this time.

The problem with Titanic was its rivets indeed. You see there was no big gash caused by the iceberg or anything, it was just simply a bunch of scraped the opened up rivets and small, but many, holes of water flooded the ship. By the way, even if they had enough lifeboats on the Titanic (which would be 64) many people believe not everyone would have survived. When the ship started sinking the crew lowered the lifeboats only a half or third full and many passengers did not want to leave the warm ship at the start of the sinking. Also, they did not even successfully lower all the lifeboats! When the boat deck was flooded they still had 2 boats left to lower, but both floated away and it was too late. Titanic only carried 20 boats on her.

Yeah... it was basically a fail pretty much all around.

I don't think that they were counting the poorer people when they decided how many lifeboats they needed.

They were not counting any people actually! They were following old British regulations that were made in 1894, that did not order lifeboats based on passengers, but by their weight! They never thought ships could get as big as Titanic (foolish today because ships are far bigger than Titanic now) and so the regulations were never improved. The regulations said that any ship over 10,000 tons needed a minimum of 16 lifeboats! The owners of Titanic did add 4 more for 20 lifeboats, but that was not even enough. They were probably relying on their watertight compartments to keep the ship up from disasters. As a matter of fact, many historians believe that the officers should have literally rammed the ship into the iceberg which would only damage its forward compartment and the ship could stay afloat with 4 flooding total (but 5 were opened in the collision).

Seems to me that there are far better uses for the money that will be spent on this project than recreating a ship that is most famous for sinking due to poor design, arrogance and killing a bunch of people. Had the Titanic not sunk and killed a bunch of people it would have slipped out of the minds of most by now, as it would have been continually overshadowed by other ships just like it was doing to others before it sunk. Personally I wouldn't want to ride something that is famous for death.

Just to reply to both of you, its a shipping company, a shipping company has to spend money on ships right?

Well, while that may look solid on the surface, the fact of the matter is that this particular ship won't be all that useful for shipping.

Not on a ship that was notorious for sinking & the money could go to much more efficient cheaper ships.

It is a passenger liner, its whole point is shipping.

Well it is based on modern designed when you are talking engines and such. Only the passenger rooms will really resemble then Titanic and off course it exterior looks. Think of it as memorial. Do you like memorials for wars that were notorious for weapons and death? You must be against the Vietnam Memorial, WW1 Memorial, and WW2 memorial.

Fun fact: nobody ever said titanic was unsinkable. Media invented that quote after it had been sunk.

Since when does a shipping company ever try and help poverty?

They are a shipping company. Their whole company is based off of shipping. Stop complaining that they can be helping Africans and all that crap with that money and blah blah blah. That is like telling Joes furniture shop, that instead of producing and selling furniture, they should spen all their money on giving food to Africans, and go broke and out of business in the process.
