A very difficult question given how hollow most Politicians have become in contemporary two party representative democracies.

I would have to say, that despite this, Dr Ron Paul is a politician who has, against all odds, remained an extremely successful politician without succumbing to mind numbing partisan drivel. It's almost incredulous that he is able to voice such strong opposition to the most fundamental tenants that support the United States Political hegemony; Namely the Military Industrial Complex, Big Pharma (and corporatism generally) and the monetary system.

He is a pristine example of a Libertarian and someone who all Libertarians should aspire to. I am an avid admirer.

Chavez (president of Venezuela) is also an excellent modern political figure, who survived all attempts to unseat his political rise, including coup d'etat attempts. He has implemented a range of social projects and policies including large scale Health and Education reforms and the introduction of participatory communes, actively involving people form all walks of life in the political process. Since 2003 he has doubled real GDP in Venezuela, cut poverty by more than half (Extreme poverty has fallen by 72 percent) and essentially saved the nation from the ravages of the Neoliberal economic doctrine that Venezela had been subject to for decades.

I like Putin the most, while I don't fundamentally agree with his policies, he's arguably the best world leader alive.

Here's Russia's economy, but notice 2008-2010. Building economy not reliable on western markets paid off and even boosted sales of domestic products.

While I don't agree with Putin on right wing policies and he lacks good social policies I do understand the situation of Russia and that economy is the priority. In near future I would like to see more social reforms to help out a fellow man as they have quite secure economy now.

As for who is politically closest to me I cannot say, as there has not been a leader that is "perfect" but Halonen & Koivisto did quite a good job for what they were as far as I'm concerned.

The Dalai Lama if we encountered a alien race today he would be my first choice as a ambassador of humanity. There is nothing bad you can say about this man.[IMG]

Huh. Most of today's geopolitical figures are pretty uninspiring. Seems like all the interesting ones died out 20 years ago. British politics in particular are incredibly stale.

I have to agree with Shisno and go with Mahmoud Abbas, for all the same reasons. Other than that, I really don't idolize politicians, at least not today's ones. I would rather idolize someone like Ghandi rather than someone like Bush.

I think idolizing anyone is a bad idea. Leads to having a pretty flat perspective of stuff. Communists are often incredibly guilty of this.

Right, well clearly everyone is too hung up on the use of "idol" in the thread title to actually contribute rationally, so I ask that a mod change the thread title to "Modern politicians that you look up to".
