    Those are good points but how about the 100 years war? It started because willam the conqueror was the king now say Harold Hardratta was the king would the 100 years start? Would there still be the hostility between the french and the british in those times? Would France help the americans in their war of independance?

    Well, one thing leads to another. The rivalry between France and Britain ultimately led to the colonization of North America and the creation of 2 of the most advanced countries in the Americas as well.

    I believe at the time their where strictly small countries, I do not recall any candidates city states other then the papal states which was just rome/Vatican city.

    That's explained by the feudalism idea, the more land you had, the richer you were, so I don't know if city-states were a good idea to start with, also the Pope had a pretty sizeable land in mid-Italy during the medieval times, it was not until way after the unification of Italy that the Vatican state was found.
