What would you lot classify as the more dangerious and tedious job? The self-described firefighter or the EMS worker who deals with a majority of society's lowest teirs' and scum' (and the normal, everyday folks') medical needs.

firefighting is more dangerous, but ems workers have a very shitty thankless job. They have to deal regularly with the dregs of society(drug addicts, criminals etc) and witness humanity at it's worst , they often see people die before their eyes and can do nothing about it, and they never really get real recongnition or thanks from the public, so ems worker is definatly the shittier job of the two.

Since my family is composed of both firefighters and EMS workers, EMS wins.

If by EMS you mean emergency medical service than fire fighters. I think going into a burning building is likely to generate more deaths for the firefighters than trying to help someone who over dosed on heroine and driving an ambulance.

I have a similar situation as Observer. I personally know people who work in both fields. Using that knowledge I can honestly say I could not chose.

    Edit- 2,000th Post. Woot!

I would not go as far as to say, "By far." I know EMS workers who have been attacked by victims.

FF's have to go in to burning buildings that could collapse at any moment to get the people in side, with debris falling, and that type of stuff. EMS once in awhile might have a unstable person who pulls a knife on them, but usually they have a police escort. So FF's have a way more dangerous job.

I assume it's different here in Britain, over here (as far as my limited experience can tell) it's probably more dangerous being a paramedic, although when there's a really serious fire-related incident, it's obviously much more lethal than most of what medics face more frequently. I think here in the Midlands a couple of years ago, several firefighters died and some senior fire officers got into serious trouble over it.
Fortunately, such things don't happen that often, so the paramedics get a worse time on a daily basis. At the same time, they both come across as quite rewarding jobs in my opinion.

My friend who is an EMS worker had to take a guy who was surrounded by snakes, 4 of which were timber rattlesnakes. The police on the scene would not approach him. I have more, mostly about being attacked by the victim, if you would like to keep this up.

I would still say equally dangerous.

Why would any victim attack an EMS worker?

How is that a reason? You can be in panic, but you won't attack the first person you see, right?

I would say there are more fires then EMS workers being surrounded by snakes, but that's just me.

    Huh, which is more dangerous....
They're probably both tied, with a lot of variables depending on area.
In a tough city, EMS takes the cake. You just never know who's had a bad day.
In certain conditions firefighting can be real tough to, every year the forests in BC set of fire, it can't be easy to be in the middle of it all.

In most small American cities, firefighters respond along with Paramedics. In most cases they are the first ones there(cities usually have more firefighter crews than Ems crews). Also many Firefighters are registered paramedics.
