One mans faliure is another man success. So most of the "biggest failures" in history might actually just be the case of the biggest success in histroy.

Japan was prepared to fight to the last man and civilian. If you ever read about the fall of (Saipan was it?), that was our first glimpse of what Japan would do. The civilians jumped off cliffs and killed themselves. Others fought back. Only a small few actually decided to stay and live under the control of the Americans. I believe the Japanese government was giving the civilians sharpened bamboo stakes to charge at the Americans. Millions and millions and millions of Americans were predicted to die in just the FIRST invasion of the southern island (shikoku is it?). Millions more in the invasion of the main island. Not to mention how many Japanese civilians would have lost their lives. To be honest, dropping the bomb was a blessing and saved millions of American and Japanese lives.

Also, if you did not know, the Japanese usually beheaded any American flyers they captured. Not to mention the rape of Nanking...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nanking_Massacre.
