Vikingrs - Barbarians or Civilized

What do you think? Do you think the Vikingrs were some uncivilized Barbarians or do you think they were civilized. Your opinions?

There's no such thing as "civilized" and "uncivilized".

They were the only force mental enough to defeat the rampaging ginger hordes of Caledonia. They've got to have something going for them.

I think that the fact that they built ships in which they were able to sail over the Atlantic Ocean or to Constantinople made them more "civilized" than most of the tribes on the European mainland. Maybe civilized is the wrong word

Well they did have bath houses and the likes, advanced burieal rituals, and amazing smithworks. It sorta depends what you take as "civilized". If you look past all the rape and pillaging then sure they were definatly civilized.

Whatever the were, they were pretty badass and pagan.

Well and i think there is such thing as "civilized" and "uncivilized". I think that the SS in WW2 for example was a bunch of uncivilized morons because they thought of themselves as the "Herrenrasse" and that they can blame the jews for everything bad in the world, and somebody who thinks this isn´t able to think clearly and has no clear mind and that in my eyes is uncivilized.

well they were master saliors and fishermen, they "colonized" Normandie. What set them appart from most of europe is the fact that they could not farm as efficently because of the climate. They were far from uncivilized compared to the rest of europe at the time 700-1066

They were also great merchants and had great influence in some cultures in Europe. Normandy is just one example

well the biggest european powers were wealthier ofcourse, hnece the viking's stealing from them, and demanding tribute. But technology wise the vikings were not behind, well of course they were behind in some areas like farming sewage disposal, etc. stuff they had no need to know or figure out. In metall works they were top noch aswell as they designed the most effective ship of theire time period (not a simple task), Also they were quite accomplished in medcin in comparison to most european countries, although this could be depated as they got allmost all the knowlege of medicin from the Arabs.
