With several stores and businesses spanding the United States and much of the world, I have begun to question the efficiency of the massive enterprises such as "Wal-Mart" and "Burger King" (big chains ect.) as I have noticed that compared to local businesses and restaurants, the bigger businesses seem to lag behind with their quality and service. These bigger stores also seem to choke local competition out as low prices offered by big brand names almost always easily beats that of local business. The jobs provided by the big businesses are numerious and usually low paying, but they are jobs, but I still can't help but wonder what a locally based business and industrial economy would look like compared to the current monopoly held by a few large businesses over such a large area.

My question to you folks is whether local businesses are better than the larger nation and internationial stores, is the local competition worth sacrificing or is it just the opposite

I would not oppose large corporations if they were simply federations of workers cooperatives.

Small businesses are better they are real job creators and they also do things with much higher quality.

As to the issue of quality and service, I find that it doesn't really matter what chain you're in. Everyone receives the same basic training and nothing but their personality and work ethic will change their service.

Local business is nice, but the reason I typically like them more is primarily due to their uniqueness.

Local businesses are in abundance where I live, although chain stores are starting to infiltrate the rural bumblefuck that is Wayne County, and so some of them are beginning to close down. It's pretty hard when the government presents you with taxes that only a national corporation could pay. Oh yeah I support local business.

I never stop hearing about, "Shop at Local Bussinesses" simply because they're local bussinesses.

Not entirly, Wal-Mart can simply sell cheaper. Thus, the Free Market kicks in and Wal-Mart is bigger.

Couldn't really give a damn. We shouldn't put all our eggs in one basket, business's that are successful are so because there is a demand for their services or products in particular. If you don't want to get closed down by walmart maybe you should actually start a business that offers something they aren't offering. Woah Lamp that's unthinkable we should start another miniature grocer.

It depends what I'm buying. Realistically it's a combination of convenience and price. Despite the fact my dad owns a bank (very prominent locally, but it only has 2 branches), I bank with Bank of America. Is it because of some deeper philosophical belief I have in the primacy of markets? Not really, I just like the ability to have an app on my phone that I can transfer money from, view balances, and even deposit checks. Convenience is key my friends, not size of business
