So, after watching part 5 of Stalin's ME3 LP and hearing him talk about AI, I gave the subject a lot more thought. The timing couldn't have been more right, as last Wednesday, I went to an IT congress in Utrecht, where a few people talked about AI, or things that had something to do with AI. So, I already posted a comment on the video, but as it's such an interesting subject (both scientifically and ethically, almost as usual with IT, it seems) and for now the science section is sort of empty, I thought it deserved its own thread. Anyway, here's what I commented on the video: With the first paragraph, I was referring to Stalin's comment on how interesting it would be if computers were to work with a different system instead of binary. So, any thoughts?
Artificial Intelligence. Generally, it refers to computers being able to act and think like human beings.
yeah, once ai on robots gets consciousness. it's pretty much slavery to keep them as our work machines. am i right?
C: A..I.. What does the 'A' stand for? Ch: Artificial. C: What does the 'I' stan... Ch: Intelligence. C: Okay... what was the 'A' again? Ch: Lets move on. Like if you know where that is from.
I don't think so, actually. Slaves were forced to work under terrible conditions in which they suffered. Robots, however, are programmed to obey anyway. We already have machines and robotics working hard for us, mainly because they're better at the job than we are ourselves. Consciousness is more than just feeling, seeing hearing etc. Machines and computers, no matter how complex are incapable of feeling emotion. They can observe humans, see when emotion is shown and then apply it themselves. However, it doesn't truly "feel" that way, as it's a computer. Although, if I'm completely wrong and robots can be made sentient, I call dibs on HK-47.
I was talking what if robots got a different system than the binary system. But anyhow but slavery is the subjection of a person to another person. If they get a real Consciousness not just one copied from humans. Then it would be slavery wouldn't it. They would be like us. Man I would like to live 100 hundred years from now, or in mass effect universe. Not with the reapers and with that terrible ending but you get my point..
Adopting a different system than binary (like with quantum computing, I believe) will probably only make them compute faster, and that's about it. It might help them recognise human behaviour more, and learn it, but they still won't even be close to humans. I've heard some whispers about the ending being bad, but I guess I'll have to either wait on a price drop so I can get it myself, or wait until Stalin finishes the LP.
It seems it won't be long before it becomes a realization, or comes close to it, at least. We're already talking about advanced human augmentation and advanced nanobiotechnology. I'd expect to see a human head rigged up to some expensive machinery and preserved for millions of years, but I'm not sure if it'd ever be possible to see computers evolve into sentient beings.
Let's just hope that if evil sentient robots DO try and kill us all, they're more like GlaDOS and less like AM.
