Warning, long comment incoming!
About Canadian politics,
First I'd like to say that I live in Thomas Mulcair's county (Outremont, Montréal, Québec). WE were actually the ones who started the NPD/NDP wave in Québec ! :D
Then concerning your third example, I think the Conservative party got its majority not because people were enthusiastic about it, but mostly because a lot of Liberal electors in Ontario switched to the NPD/NDP.
This allowed Harper to get most deputies in Ontario.
So I think this example wasn't really the best one.
The one about Alberta, however, was a perfect one.
Now I'm gonna add another example myself:
Last in Quebec a new politic party was created: the CAQ (Coalition Avenir Québec ; Quebec coalition for the future).
This party quickly rose to 40% vote intentions, overthrowing the second party and almost reaching the first one.
As you stated, the media really took a long time before they really started talking about his program.
And when they did, they realised they had none !
This is when the CAQ went down to 22%.
So I think this example shows your plot pretty well.
If you want one more example, just look at what happened recently at the French presidential elections, or at the Greek elections!
In conclusion, I definitely think we consider politics too much like a game.
